While wood is very pretty, getting that perfect machinist fit on each notch is HARD, and hoping it will stay that way in it's normal environment is even tougher. I've seen a number made by machinist and they're fabulous.
Using solid aluminum square bar would be easiest. Make GREAT coffee table conversation pieces, kids take them to school to challenge their teachers, whatever. I make lots of these in wood and people love them. The best ones to start with are ones that use a solid piece as the "key". And check out level one puzzles that can be made with through cuts.
